Damp and Dampness in Buildings
All properties are different which is why we offer a range of
damp proofing solutions to resolve damp and dampness in buildings of all types.
There are many sources of dampness in buildings, rising damp, penetrating damp and condensation are the main types. It is important to get a reliable and properly trained
damp surveyor to check out the problem fully before arriving at any conclusions. An experienced surveyor will be
able to tell you whether your problem is related to rising damp, penetrating damp, condensation or a combination of
two or more dampness types. Each type of damp will have different charecteristics and different solutions. If the
problem is wrongly diagnosed you could end up wasting money as the symptoms of the damp problem will not be fully
resolved.

description.
Rising Damp
Rising Damp is where dampness from the ground travels up
the wall from the ground underneath. Rising damp often leaves tidemarks on your walls or condensation on
the surface of your walls, Click the link to read about rising
damp
Penetrating Damp
Penetrating damp can be from driving rain, leaking gutters, defective adjoining roof coverings,
defective seals to windows doors defective pointing, high ground levels etc. Click the link to read
about penetrating damp
Bridging
Bridging is where a high ground level is above the
level of a damp proof course. this is often found in places where there are embankments, properties on a
hill, raised flower beds etc, or it can be when internal plaster is carried below the damp proof course level
and dampness can track around .
Condensation
Condensation is an entirely different problem but can be
mistaken for rising damp if not tested thoroughly. Condensation can often lead to mould, black spot mould and mildew all of which can be harmful to your health, especially for those with pre
existing conditions such as asthma or other repiratory problems. Read about condensation in our condensation
section here Condensation
Qualified Surveyors
Our surveyors will take the time
to fully check out the symptoms of every damp problem to arrive at a fully informed and considered diagnosis, often
we recommend alternative courses of action or monitor the situation to ensure that a damp course insertion is
definitely required.
Our senior surveyor comments:-
Of all the inspections I carry out for damp problems, over 50% will have been already
treated by another firm who have usually gone out of business or are not there to honour their guarantee.
Correct diagnosis is essential to effectively solve damp problems thoroughly and in one treatment. Some customers
tell me that other 'surveyors' were only at their property for 15 minutes and in that time they did their
survey, had a coffee and worked out the price!
In my opinion on an average size house a thorough damp survey will take at least an hour.
Often, the result of poor inspection and diagnosis is that these poor people are having to suffer the disruption
and cost twice or more before they get the problems solved.
